Close Shave features an important dance duo that had been active since the mid 1920s. They performed throughout Southern California, and musicologist Steven Lasker points out that they performed at Frank Sebastian’s Cotton Club (located in Culver City) in 1928. Beginning in the early 1940s, however, they moved effortlessly into teaching, choreography and the production of nightclub revues. Their home base, beginning in 1942, when this Soundie was produced, and extending into 1944, was the Bal-Tabarin Café. California. [jazzonfilm.com] ▪︎▪︎▪︎ Aurora Borealis Greely was an African American dancer and choreographer from the 1920s through the 1940s. In 1929 she opened a dancing school in Los Angeles, and in 1932, she took a break from dancing because she suffered from "rheumatic leg". Greely returned to dancing an in 1935 she was described as a "popular dance team" when she danced with Leroy Broomfield. In 1933, she and Broomfield danced before King Gustaf V of Sweden while in Shanghai. At the Cotton Club in Culver City, California, Greely selected the dancers from her dancing school for the shows, and was herself dancing in shows. ▪︎▪︎▪︎ Leroy Broomfield was a dancer in the United States and appeared on stage and in films. He was also a producer, choreographer and taught dance. Broomfield was from Omaha, Nebraska. During a three day Smart Set Company production in Omaha he worked as chorus boy and met producers Salem Tutt Whitney and J. Tutt, known as the Tutt Brothers. Impressed with Bloomfield and at the urging of his uncle, the brothers took him with them to Broadway in New York City. While there he was a student of dancer Ted Shawn. It was also during this time he met Aurora Greeley who became his long term dancing partner.
